“Dating a black man”
I recently had the pleasure of being a “fly on the wall” while a group of girls discussed interracial dating. Well, actually, the main theme was upheld by one girl in the group proclaiming “I can’t believe I’m dating a black guy!” I got the feeling she was new to this.
So while eating my gyro and sipping on my Rob Roy I listened to this conversation. It did occur to me that my lunch could be the poster child for their conversation, a Greek dish and a Scottish drink mixing together, anyway…
So this group of girls weighed the pros and cons of dating a black guy. I was unimpressed by the rampant use of stereotypes in their conversation. They were deciding this girls’ happiness based on if she wanted to “eat chicken and ribs for the rest of her life”. How sad…
Now maybe it’s me, but I don’t even understand the argument about inter racial dating. Race to me just means a different culture, and you can find different cultures everywhere. Being from the United States, just by geography, we have different cultures. The people in the midwest are very different from southerners, the west coast is much different from the east coast.
Dating to me is seeing if someone else’s priorities match yours. And a culture is just a certain set of priorities. You don’t need to be a black man, or a Jew, or Christian, or Irish, etc to have a culture. You can be a skater, or punk, or surfer, or goth, or southerner, or whatever you what to be.
There are plenty of issues you will have to accommodate with your partner while dating. Some will be harder than others. But if you like the person enough, you can accept nearly anything. Just realize that if dating someone a different race is hard for you, it may be hard for your partner too, they’re dating outside their race as well.
Now as far as inter racial dating web sites go, any site will have a variety of people you can choose from, but here are a few sites that specialize in interracial dating:
